Pierre Bertrand (Cardinal)

Pierre Bertrand (born March 1280 in Annonay , Vivarais ; † June 23, 1349 in the Montaut Priory in Villeneuve-lez-Avignon on the banks of the Rhone opposite Avignon ) was a French cardinal, theologian and canon lawyer.

Life

Pierre Bertrand studied at the University of Avignon philosophy and Montpellier Jura. He then became a canon in Le Puy (1296) and professor in Avignon, Montpellier and Orléans .

A skilled lawyer, he soon received a position in the Parlement of Paris , on the Royal Council and in the Queen's Chancellery. He then became a priest.

In quick succession he became canon and dean of Le Puy-en-Velay , on January 28, 1320 Bishop of Nevers and on May 19, 1322 Bishop of Autun . In 1329, at the so-called Council of Vincennes , he defended the ecclesiastical claims to jurisdiction against Pierre de Cugnières, who represented the primacy of secular jurisdiction. In 1330 Pierre was supposed to become bishop of Bourges , but refused. He became the papal legate to settle the dispute between Emperor Ludwig IV and the Austrian Duke Frederick the Fair . In 1331 he gave up his bishopric. On December 20, 1331, Pope John XXII appointed him cardinal priest of San Clemente . In March 1332 he became a member of the papal curia. He took part in the conclave in 1334 and became a legate of Italy, Paris and Bruges . On June 18, 1340 he became dean of Notre-Dame du Puy. He took part in the conclave of 1342 that Pope Clement VI. chose, part. From 1348 he was cardinal proto-priest .

He founded several charitable organizations in Annonay , the Collège d'Autun (1343 in Paris), which enabled five poor students to study theology, five in law and five in the visual arts.

Pierre Bertrand died in the Montaut priory, which he had founded, near Avignon.
