The conclave of 1342 was the electoral assembly of the cardinals after the death of Pope Benedict XII.

Benedict XII. died in Avignon on April 25, 1342.

The conclave began on May 5th and lasted only two days. The choice fell unanimously on Pierre Roger, who is Pope Clement VI. named and thus became the fourth Pope of the Avignon papacy . According to the Cardinals des Farges and Ceccano, the choice was made “by divine inspiration alone”. On May 19, the new Pope was crowned by Cardinal Protodeacon Raymond Guillaume des Farges in the Dominican Church in Avignon .

Shortly after the death of Benedict XII. sent King Philip VI. from France his eldest son John the Good to Avignon with the task of supporting the candidacy of Pierre Roger, but when he came the election had already been concluded with the result desired by the king.

Ten eligible voters were from John XXII., Six from Benedict XII. and one Clemens V. appointed. Thirteen of them were French , three Italian and one Spanish .

The office of the camerlengos of the Holy Roman Church occupied at this time by Gasbert de Valle , Archbishop of Narbonne , (no cardinal) and nephew of Pope John XXII.
