history
The Mendelssohn Society was registered on October 3, 1967 by members of the Mendelssohn family in the register of associations of the Berlin-Charlottenburg District Court . The entry was made on October 24, 1967. The association has a crane with stone as its logo , which was already used as a seal motif by the Mendelssohn bankers . According to Pliny the Elder, this motif has been a symbol of vigilant care since ancient times .
The association's first tasks were to re-establish the Moses Mendelssohn grant, which originally existed from 1929 to 1933, to promote the general cataloging of letters and documents from the Mendelssohn family as well as Wilhelm Hensel's paintings and drawings, and preparatory steps for the establishment of a “bank -Archivs Mendelssohn ”with special consideration of the 19th century.
A general cataloging of the Mendelssohn letters and documents has not yet been carried out. Shortly after it was founded, the Mendelssohn Society began acquiring autographs and other Mendelssohn documents, which they made available as deposits to the Mendelssohn archive of the Berlin State Library .
In the run-up to the anniversary celebrations for the 250th birthday of Moses Mendelssohn in 1979, the plan to re-establish the Moses Mendelssohn scholarship was taken up. In cooperation with the then Senator for Cultural Affairs of West Berlin , Dieter Sauberzweig , the decision was made not to renew the scholarship and instead award the Moses Mendelssohn Prize every two years. The seven-member jury includes a representative from the Mendelssohn Society.
In 2002, some members of the Mendelssohn Society founded the Jägerstraße History Mile Working Group to review the history of the Mendelssohns in Jägerstraße in Berlin-Mitte . In 2005 this working group was merged into the registered association Geschichtsforum Jägerstraße , which in turn merged with the Mendelssohn Society in 2009.
In 2009 the internationally renowned musician Daniel Barenboim took over the patronage of the Mendelssohn Society.
Since 2010, the Berlin Choir Association has awarded Sibling Mendelssohn Medals annually, which are presented in cooperation with the Mendelssohn Society in the Mendelssohn Remise in Berlin-Mitte. The Mendelssohn Society and the Mendelssohn Chamber Choir Berlin have been working together since September 2013, which will include premieres of compositions by the Mendelssohn family in the Mendelssohn Remise.
On November 3, 2013, the association opened a permanent exhibition on the history of the Mendelssohn family in a former chapel at the Dreifaltigkeitsfriedhof in Berlin-Kreuzberg . Over 30 members of the family were buried in the cemeteries in front of Hallesches Tor .
