career

Rudolf Elvers was born the son of merchants . He first went to school in Plau and then to secondary school near Waren an der Müritz . During his years in the Wehrmacht in World War II , he was captured by Soviet soldiers . After his return he studied with Walter Gerstenberg in Rostock in 1946 and later at the Free University in Berlin. In 1953 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on tempos in Mozart's instrumental music and then worked as a music dealer at Merseburg Verlag in Berlin.

Elvers remained an avid collector throughout his life . He built up one of the most important collections of autograph letters, manuscripts and artefacts from Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and his family, which he donated to the City History Museum in Leipzig in 2009 .

During his years in the music department of the Berlin State Library he was responsible - partly together with Hans-Günter Klein - for a number of catalogs that are now considered standard reference works, including those on Johann Sebastian Bach , Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and the Mendelssohn family .

Elvers also worked as a music critic during this time and prepared several volumes for an edition of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's letters, which is now published by Bärenreiter-Verlag in Kassel .
