Andreas Holschneider

Andreas Holschneider (born April 6, 1931 in Freiburg im Breisgau ; † September 24, 2019 in Baden-Baden ) was a German music historian and writer.

Life

Holschneider was born in 1931 as the eldest of four sons of the chemist Friedrich Wilhelm Holschneider and Olga Holschneider, nee. Krafft, born. He studied piano with Edith Picht-Axenfeld at the Freiburg University of Music , acquired in 1956 the concert diploma, then studied musicology and Romance languages and was in 1960 with a thesis on Handel's Messiah in Mozart's arrangement at the University of Tübingen for Dr. phil. PhD .

After a one-year research stay in Italy to study sources for the New Mozart Edition, he became an assistant at the Musicological Institute at Hamburg University. He completed his habilitation there with a thesis on the earliest contrapuntal pieces of music in the Middle Ages. In 1970 he took over the management of archive production at the Deutsche Grammophon Gesellschaft . After various career stages within the Deutsche Grammophon Gesellschaft, he became Managing Director and President of Deutsche Grammophon in 1987.

He lived in Baden-Baden until his death in September 2019. He was married with a son and a daughter.
