Walter Gerstenberg

Walter Gerstenberg (born December 26, 1904 in Hildesheim , † October 26, 1988 in Tübingen ) was a German musicologist and expert on Johann Sebastian Bach , Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Franz Schubert .

Life

Gerstenberg passed the Abitur in Hildesheim in 1923 and studied musicology, philosophy and German at the universities in Berlin and Leipzig from 1925 to 1929 . From 1929 to 1932 he worked at the University of Leipzig and at the Leipzig State Conservatory. From 1935 to 1940 he was a private lecturer, and from 1938 lecturer for German music history and historical music-making practice at the University of Cologne . In 1940 he was a substitute professor and lecturer at the University of Rostock . From 1941 to 1948 Gerstenberg was professor at the University of Rostock (1946 temporary dismissal), from 1948 to 1952 professor for musicology at the Free University of Berlin , 1952 to 1970 full professor for musicology at the University of Tübingen , at the same time its rector for a time (1965 / 66). After his retirement in 1970 he became honorary professor in Salzburg in 1974 .

Gerstenberger initiated the New Schubert Edition on November 19, 1963, the 135th anniversary of Franz Schubert's death, with the establishment of the International Schubert Society. V. together with Otto Erich Deutsch .

His students included Walther Dürr , Georg von Dadelsen , Rudolf Elvers , Clytus Gottwald , Christoph-Hellmut Mahling and Wolfgang Plath .
