Augusto da Costa (born October 22, 1920 in Rio de Janeiro , † March 1, 2004 ibid) often just called Augusto , was a Brazilian football player . He was the captain of the Brazilian national football team at the 1950 World Cup in Brazil . He was born in Rio de Janeiro and began his career in 1936 at São Cristóvão, where he stayed until 1944. In 1945 he joined the CR Vasco da Gama association , where he stayed until 1954.

He played 20 times for the Brazilian national team and scored one goal. He won the Copa America in 1949 and led his team as captain in the playoff for the 1950 World Cup. Although Brazil was the big favorite, had a home advantage in the Maracana Stadium and only needed a draw, they lost to Uruguay and were only runner-up. This game is also known as maracanaço .
