Venues in Brazil in 1949

The Campeonato Sudamericano from 1949 was the 21st game of the South American continental championship in football and took place from April 3rd to May 11th for the third time in Brazil. With the exception of defending champion Argentina , all 8 former members of CONMEBOL were at the start.

The tournament was played as before in the league system (everyone against everyone). If there was a tie in first place, a playoff was planned. As this became necessary, there were new records at the Copa America with 29 games and 135 goals. Most of the games were played in the Estádio São Januário, home of CR Vasco da Gama, and in the Estádio do Pacaembu in São Paulo. Two matches took place in the then stadium of Botafogo Rio de Janeiro , one each in the Estádio Urbano Caldeira in Santos and the Estádio Independência in Belo Horizonte. As in previous tournaments, some games were played on one day as part of a double event in the same stadium.

After 1919 and 1922, Brazil also won its third title when the tournament was held in its own country, confirming its home nimbus.
