Ademir Marques de Menezes (born November 8, 1922 in Recife , † May 11, 1996 in Rio de Janeiro ), often just called Ademir , was a Brazilian football player . He was considered one of the best strikers of his time.

Ademir, who was nicknamed Queixada (in German wooden chin ), was characterized by his acceleration in connection with surprising tempo changes, as well as nimble body illusions and excellent ball control. He was also an artful target shooter.

youth

Ademir was born on November 8, 1922 in Vila de Bico do Motocolombo in Recife in the state of Pernambuco . He took his first steps in football at Sport Recife , where his father Antonio Rodrigues Menezes was president.

The club career

The Brazilian center forward Ademir began his career at Sport Recife , where he played until the 1942 season. From 1942 to 1945 he showed his skills at CR Vasco da Gama , switched to Fluminense Rio de Janeiro in 1946/47 and then returned to Vasco da Gama. In 1956 he ended his active career after 497 games in which he scored 396 goals.

The national player

At 18 Ademir was appointed to the national team for the first time. Ademir became one of the stars of the 1950 World Cup in Brazil . On June 24th he scored two goals against Mexico (4-0), against Yugoslavia (2-0) he scored the opening goal after just four minutes. The group first Brazil only really got going in the first game of the final round. In front of 160,000 spectators in the Maracanã Stadium , the reigning Olympic champion Sweden was dealt 7-1 on July 9th. In that game, Ademir scored four goals. Four days later, in a 6-1 win against Spain, Ademir scored two goals again. So he screwed his yield to nine goals and became the top scorer of this World Cup. However, these goals were not enough for the world title. Brazil lost the decisive game - the so-called Maracanaço - against Uruguay 2-1. A defeat that left the whole country in mourning. Significantly, the decisive game was the only one in which Ademir failed to score. Brazil reacted hysterically to the lost play-off: the Seleção's white jersey was never used again, there was no international match for two years and almost the entire squad was replaced. At the 1954 World Cup only 4 former World Cup participants were represented. Ademir himself was no longer there in 1954.

  • World Cup: 6 games - 9 goals
  • Statistics: 38 caps - 31 goals or 39 caps / 32 goals

Activities after the football career

After his career as a football player, he worked as a popular football reporter on Brazilian TV and radio, as a newspaper correspondent ("O Dia", "A Noticia"), as a football coach (Vasco da Gama and Fluminense), and as a businessman.
