He had his greatest successes with the Polish national team. With 45 goals he is the third best scorer in the Polish national team behind Robert Lewandowski and Włodzimierz Lubański . He played his last and 100th international match for Poland in 1984.
In 1972 he won the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Munich with the national team under coaching legend Kazimierz Górski . This was also the first major success of a Polish national team and the start of the golden era of the 1970s. In the 1974 FIFA World Cup in Germany he finished third and was also at the Water battle of Frankfurt involved. Poland won the third place match against Brazil 1-0 and Lato scored the golden goal. At the same time he was the top scorer in this World Cup with seven goals.
Lato also took part in the 1978 World Cup in Argentina . However, his team was eliminated in the second final round, but at the Soccer World Cup in Spain in 1982 he was able to repeat the success of 1974. Poland was again third in the small final against France .

On October 30, 2008 he was elected President of the Polish Football Association PZPN . At the end of September 2012, Lato decided not to be re-elected because he could not submit the required votes for support and left office on October 26, 2012.
