Henryk Tomasz Reyman (born July 28, 1897 in Krakow , † April 11, 1963 there ) was a Polish football player and coach. The Henryk Reyman Stadium in Krakow is named after him today .
life and career
Henryk Reyman was born in Cracow , then part of Austria-Hungary , in 1897 . There he first attended high school. In 1910 he also started playing football at Wisła Kraków , the club he was to remain loyal to throughout his life. In 1914 he played for the first time with the adult team from Wisła.
But he had to interrupt his football career and his training with the beginning of the First World War . He switched to an officer's school in Troppau in Moravia and fought from 1916, first on the Austrian Eastern Front, and later also in Italy. After the defeat of the Axis Powers, Reyman returned to the now independent Poland.
Shortly afterwards he took part in the Polish-Soviet war on the Polish side in the fighting against Soviet Russia . The war ended successfully for Poland, in 1921 Reyman also took part in the third uprising in Silesia . Since 1918 Reyman played football again for Wisła Kraków, but it was not until 1921 that he devoted himself fully to his footballing career. From 1921 he also played in the Polish national football team. At the Olympic Games of 1924 he even led them as team captain under coach Adam Obrubański .
In the late 1920s, Reyman had his prime as an active footballer. Reyman set a personal record in 1927: In 23 league games he scored 37 goals. This is still a record in the Polish Football League today. In the same year he won the Polish championship with Wisła Krakow and was the league's top scorer . In 1928 he was again champion with Wisła and was again top scorer of the league. He ended his career as a player in 1933.
At the beginning of the Second World War he fought as a soldier on the Polish side. As a battalion commander, he was captured by Germany as a prisoner of war during the attack on Poland between the Poznan-Warsaw highway in September 1939. Seriously wounded, he was taken to a hospital, from which he was able to escape after his recovery. After the Second World War he was involved in the re-establishment of the PZPN , the Polish Football Association. In 1947 he was briefly the coach of the Polish national soccer team, but was soon removed from this position in the wake of the rise of Stalinism . After Stalin's death, Reyman was again coach of the national team from 1957 to 1958. Until his own death in 1963, he was also active in various administrative positions in his old club Wisła Krakow.
Reyman died in Krakow at the age of 65. He was buried in the local Rakowicki cemetery. A street in Krakow is named in his honor, as is the club's current stadium, the Henryk Reyman Stadium .
