Antoni Krzysztof Piechniczek (born May 3, 1942 in Königshütte , Upper Silesia ) is a former Polish football player and coach .
Life
Antoni Piechniczek is the son of the Silesian mechanic and Wehrmacht soldier Emil Piechniczek, who was arrested by the NKVD in 1945 . Emil Piechniczek was imprisoned in Vitebsk , where he died on May 8, 1945. Antoni Piechniczek now lives in Wisła .
Sports career
During his playing days, Piechniczek was a defensive midfielder and right back. He played for Legia Warsaw from 1962 to 1965 and then from 1965 to 1972 in his hometown club Ruch Chorzów . In the 1972/1973 season he played for a year in Chateauroux , France , before ending his active career. The greatest success of the three-time Polish national player was winning the Polish championship in 1968 with Ruch Chorzów.
The graduate of the Warsaw Sports University then started working as a trainer. His club stations were: BKS Bielsko-Biała , Odra Opole , Ruch Chorzów, Górnik Zabrze . Abroad he worked for clubs in Qatar , United Arab Emirates and Tunisia . His greatest successes as a club coach were winning the Polish league cup in 1977 with Odra Opole and the Polish championship in 1987 with Górnik Zabrze.
In December 1980 he was appointed to the national coaching position of the Polish national soccer team. He began his work on January 5, 1981 and in his first year qualified for the 1982 World Cup in Spain . This tournament was to be the last big triumph of a Polish team in a World Cup tournament. After rather weaker games in the preliminary round against Cameroon , Italy and Peru , the team made it to the semi-finals in the second final round after a victory over Belgium and a draw against the Soviet Union . Italy were too strong, however, after their 2-0 defeat against eventual world champions, they managed a 3-2 win against France in the game for third place. As at the 1974 World Cup in Germany , Poland won the bronze medal.
Although Piechniczek was unable to qualify with his team for the European Football Championship in France in 1984 , he remained national coach and qualified again for the 1986 World Cup in Mexico . However, the team had already passed their zenith. They survived the preliminary round and knocked Portugal out of the tournament, but Brazil were too strong in the round of 16. Then Piechniczek resigned from his office. In May 1996 he returned to this post again to lead Poland to the 1998 World Cup in France. This failed, however, and he resigned again on June 7, 1997. Piechniczek also worked abroad as the national coach of Tunisia and the United Arab Emirates. With Tunisia he took part in the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul .
