Lars Hanson
Lars Hanson (born July 26, 1886 in Gothenburg , Sweden , † April 8, 1965 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish theater interpreter and film actor .
Life
Hanson was born on July 26, 1886, the son of a shipyard worker and began to work for a goldsmith. From 1906 he attended the drama school of the Swedish National Theater Royal Dramatic Theater ( Dramaten ) in Stockholm. After completing his training, he was employed at the newly founded Intimate Theater, but returned to the National Dramate Theater in 1922, where he was to celebrate great success as a star for almost four decades, especially in great Shakespeare and Strindberg roles. Critics praised Hanson's nuanced voice treatment, his powerful temperament, his analytical acumen and the imaginative design of his parts. He was unanimously praised as the leading Swedish theater actor.
He made his film debut in 1915 in Mauritz Stiller's Dolken ( The Dagger ). He also worked closely with him later; he appeared in Stiller's Erotikon and alongside Greta Garbo in Gösta Berling , a Selma Lagerlöf film adaptation. This film earned him international recognition. In 1926 he came to Hollywood at the request of Lillian Gish , where he signed a contract with MGM and directed the film version of The Scarlet Letter with Gish . With her he also starred in The Wind by Victor Sjöström with.
Hanson preferred to play the role of the young lover in the film. In Sjöström's The Divine Woman and in Clarence Brown's Es Was , he was cast alongside Garbo. With the start of the sound film his career in the USA ended and he went back to Sweden. There he was mainly active in dramatics , but also continued to appear in films, including twice alongside the young Ingrid Bergman ( Walpurgis Night and Pa solsidan ); his last film appearance was in 1951. In 1956 Hanson received the Eugene O'Neill Award , a Swedish theater award given annually to the most important actor.
In 1922, Lars Hanson married the ex-wife of Swedish director Gustaf Molander , the Swedish actress Karin Molander . They stayed together until his death on April 8, 1965.
