Gustaf Harald August Molander (born November 18, 1888 in Helsinki , † June 19, 1973 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish director and screenwriter .

Life

1888 Gustaf Molander, the son of the director and writer Harald Molander (1858-1900) and the Swedish actress Lydia Wessler was in Finnish born Helsinki. There his father worked at the Swedish theater . His brother Olof Molander was born in 1892.

In 1907 he came to the drama school of the Swedish National Theater Royal Dramatic Theater ( Dramaten ) in Stockholm. Two years later he returned to the Swedish Theater in Helsinki as an actor. In 1910 Gustaf Molander and the Swedish actress Karin Edwertz married. The marriage ended in divorce in 1918. 1913 he moved back to Sweden, where he remained until 1926 again at Dramaten was active - as an actor and in his last years there (in 1921) as head of drama school. His student was also the Swedish film legend Greta Garbo .

His first screenplay, written under the pseudonym Harald B. Harald, Thomas Graals bästa film , was made into a film by Mauritz Stiller in 1917 . In 1919 Gustaf Molander and Elsa Fahlberg married. Their son Jan Molander was born in Stockholm in 1929, who later also became a director and actor.

Molander continued to write scripts, a. a. for the two Swedish directors Victor Sjöström and Mauritz Stiller, who made it possible for him to join Svensk Filmindustri (SF), Sweden's largest film production company . From 1920 Molander worked as a director for SF and until 1956 directed 62 productions. He made his directorial debut in 1920 with Bodakungen .

Gösta Ekman starred in many of his films , including in 1936 in Intermezzo at the side of Ingrid Bergman , who made her international breakthrough with this film and even made a Hollywood remake of the film in the USA in 1939 .

Molander was a co-founder of Swedish film . In 1943 he made Ordet , a film that is often cited as his most important work. By the time he died in 1973 he was almost completely deaf.
