theatre

Gösta Ekman made his stage debut in 1908 and quickly became one of the most successful Swedish theater actors of his time. Between 1913 and 1925 he was a member of the Swedish Theater in Stockholm, from 1926 to 1930 he was the director of the Oscar Theater and from 1931 to 1935 he had his own theater, the Vasa Theater . Ekman was known for his expressive interpretations of Shakespeare , as well as for his stage presence and voice, and his attractive, somewhat boyish appearance. In addition, he is considered to be Zarah Leander's first stage partner . During his lifetime he was considered a theater legend in Sweden.

In addition to his theater appearances, he also recorded some number reveus on vinyl.

Movie

From 1911 Gösta Ekman was also active in film. In 1912 he appeared in Victor Sjöström's first director Der Gärtner (Trädgårdsmästaren) and starred in The following year under the direction of Mauritz Stiller in The Stranger Girl (Den okända). He developed into a popular actor in his homeland and shifted to amateur roles. In 1922 he played alongside Jenny Hasselqvist in Sjöström's Die Feuerprobe / Who judges? (Vem dömer). A high point of his career is the embodiment of Faust in Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau's Faust - a German folk tale (1926). In the 1930s Ekman worked several times with Gustaf Molander . Among his most important roles under this director are those of the unworldly, idealistic professor Rolf Swedenhielm in Swedenhielms (1935) and that of the violinist Holger Brandt at the side of Ingrid Bergman in Intermezzo (1936). His last film "Father and Son" was only a third finished at the time of his death and was then canceled.

Private life

Gösta Ekman married Greta Sundström in 1914. From this marriage he is the father of the actor, director and screenwriter Hasse Ekman (1915-2004) and the grandfather of the actors Gösta Ekman junior (1939-2017) and Stefan Ekman (* 1944) and of the director Mikael Ekman (* 1943). He died in 1938 at the age of only 47 of uremia and pneumonia, probably the result of years of drug use. While filming Faust in Berlin, the workaholic Ekman was recommended cocaine as a means of coping with the workload, which resulted in drug addiction.
