action

The film is set in the 1790s during the French Revolution . Alaine de l'Estelle and her maid Leontine try to flee Paris. Alaine is expected by her fiancé, Ernest de Tresailles, near Trionville Castle. Alaine and Leontine receive unexpected help from Marc Aron, a lieutenant colonel in the Revolutionary Army. This is a member of the Jacobin troops who occupied Trionville immediately after the wedding of Ernest and Alaine. Out of love for Alaine, Marc tries to help Aron Ernest and is subsequently arrested and executed himself.

background

The film Revolution Wedding is an adaptation of the play of the same name by Sophus Michaelis from 1906. It was produced by the Berlin company Terra-Film AG . The shooting took place in the Terra Glass House and the Paris area. After passing through the Reichsfilmcensorship , which gave the film the title “Volksbildend”, it was premiered on October 3, 1928 in Berlin (Mozart Hall). In the following weeks it was launched in other European countries and later worldwide.

After the film ran in theaters, it was forgotten. It took over 60 years until the German revival. In 2010, a copy of the film from the collections of the Cinémathèque de Toulouse, which came from Moscow, was sent to the Potsdam Film Museum . There the silent film was shown again for the first time on March 26, 2011, accompanied by a Welte cinema organ .

reception

The contemporary criticism was very positive. The film has been described as a “top work”, “great film” and “great revolutionary film”. Among other things, the courage to reach the tragic end and the performance of Gösta Ekman were praised . The film was also popular with the audience. In the canonized film historiography, however, it is hardly taken into account when viewing German feature films with the subject of the French Revolution. Birgit Acar from the Filmmuseum Potsdam judged it to be “a very worth seeing, touching film” that creates tension through frequent twists and turns, even if he instrumentalizes the subject of revolution in favor of a dramatic plot and “for today's viewer an overdose of pathos, nobility and Heroism ”.
