Robert Liebmann
Robert Liebmann (born June 5, 1890 in Berlin ; † July 1942 in Auschwitz concentration camp ) was a German screenwriter .
Life
After graduating from high school, he studied law from 1908 to 1913 at the universities of Freiburg im Breisgau , Munich and Berlin. From 1914 he wrote theater and film reviews for the Deutsche Allgemeine Zeitung , from 1916 for the Berliner Morgenpost and from 1918 for the BZ am Mittag . In the same year he married his childhood friend Nené Flack.
At that time he began to write libretti , texts for revues and film scripts. With his comedies, romantic romance, adventure and horror stories, he became one of the most successful scriptwriters of the Weimar Republic. In 1928 he founded Ariel Film GmbH with Harry Piel . In April 1929 he became a dramaturge at Ufa . At the time of the beginning of the sound film, Liebmann was involved as an author or co-author on some classics, including The Blue Angel and The Congress Dances .
Shortly after the “ seizure of power ” in April 1933, Liebmann was dismissed from Ufa as a Jew. His name no longer appeared in the opening credits of the last German film in which he was involved, Walzerkrieg . Liebmann emigrated to Paris. There, and later in Hollywood, he worked on several films for emigrants. In 1938 he was back in Paris, where he received his last film commissions. In July of the same year he was expelled from the Reichsfilmkammer . German citizenship was withdrawn in July 1939. During the occupation of France by the German Wehrmacht, Liebmann was arrested and sent to the Drancy assembly camp . From there, German authorities deported him to the Auschwitz concentration camp , where he was presumably murdered immediately after his arrival.
