action
Duke Eberhard XXIII. von Flausenthurn wants his daughter Princess Alix to marry the not very young heir to the throne Prince Peter Ferdinand. But she takes a lot more pleasure in her adjutant, the young and attractive Nikolaus Graf Preyn, or "Nik" for short, who expresses his affection with a rather surprising kiss in a blissful mood. She cannot suspect that he is quite a Hallodri and a light-footed brother who does not take such things too seriously. Anyway, Alix is in love with him and a marriage is planned. But that doesn't fit the young man's concept at all, as he would rather continue to live out his youth freely and informally, for example with the brisk Viennese violinist Franzi Steingruber at the Heuriger.
Princess Alix, however, has got it into her head that it should be her Count Nik with the “Viennese Schmäh”: this one or nobody! The German princess therefore wants to try to be as "Weanerisch" as possible for him. She is looking for a perfect teacher for the Viennese way of life and ends up with Niks Gschpusi Franzi of all people! And she does a great job with the rather stiff “Preussin”. Prince Consort Nik also notices the gradual change of his foreseen wife. However, when there is an argument, Nikolaus immediately wants to break off all bridges behind him and burn through with Franzi. But late, but not too late, he notices that Alix genuinely loves him, and so the two finally find each other, not least with Franzi's help.
Production notes
A waltz dream was created between July and October 1925 in the Ufa-Atelier Neubabelsberg and the Ufa-Atelier Berlin-Tempelhof, the exterior shots were shot in Vienna in the imperial Schönbrunn Palace and in the city park. After the censorship on December 15, 1925, the film was banned from young people; the premiere took place on December 18, 1925 in Berlin's Ufa-Palast am Zoo . The six-act film was 2,836 meters long.
Berger's brother Rudolf Bamberger designed the film structures . Helmar Lerski was responsible for the special photography (so-called Schüfftan process ).
The film was a great box office but also a critical success, brought the director Berger an invitation to the USA and started a series of operetta and Vienna films in Germany, which culminated in 1931, already in the sound film era, with the world success Der Kongress tanzt . Ludwig Berger later recalled: “Neither of us was from Vienna, and yet we created the mixture that made Vienna popular. When it threatened to get too sweet, I let it rain. At that time, the first love scene in the rain was created, which was then copied so often in other films. Also because it was so nice and close together under one umbrella, I let it rain. "
Reviews
"We should be happy that there is another light, enthusiastic German film that speaks to all layers."
“What takes a long time turns out to be good: The film“ A Waltz Dream ”(1925) has become the best German operetta film! All the good spirits of Vienna jump through this film, in many shades, wonderfully real in their liveliness and abundance of existence, Viennese atmosphere, that fine scent of lightness and "a little melancholy". Ludwig Berger developed his film from the spirit of music, with artistic seriousness and at the same time with almost improvised cheerfulness, which accompanies the entire film as a soft melody. Mady Christians was never so relaxed, so relaxed, so lively in the portrayal as in the role of Princess Alix. Magnificent as a naive little princess, tipsy at the Heurigen, who is going through a change from flannel to silk stocking and bobbed head. Willy Fritsch does not put the prince consort on the type of "handsome man", but this time works with casual and therefore sympathetic elegance. A new film genre has emerged: the pairing of the fine chamber play with the cheerful play of the operetta. That means nothing else than the birth of the film from the spirit of music! Bismarck said that the Germans lack a shot of champagne in their blood. With the film "A Waltz Dream" we got what was missing ... "
