Hans Müller-Einigen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans Müller-Einigen (born October 25, 1882 in Brno , † March 8, 1950 in Einigen ; actually Hanns Müller ) was an Austrian writer, screenwriter and director. His younger brother was the writer Ernst Lothar .

Life

Hans Müller was the middle of the three sons (Robert * 1878; Ernst * 1890) of the lawyer Josef Müller and Johanna Wohlmuth. In 1897 the Jewish family moved to Vienna. He studied law at the University of Vienna and was awarded a Dr. iur. PhD. He also attended the universities of Grenoble and Leipzig , where he attended lectures on philosophy and music history, and made further study trips through Europe and the USA.

After being published during his studies, he soon became very well known and was one of the most played authors in the Vienna Burgtheater in the first two decades of the 20th century . The satirical comedy Hargudl am Bach sparked one of the great theatrical scandals of this theater when it premiered in 1909 , the performance of the play Die Flamme 1920 was one of the author's great successes.

At that time Müller lived first in Vienna and then in Berlin.

Hans Müller was repeatedly sharply attacked by Karl Kraus , for example in the last days of mankind , in which Kraus Müller even had several appearances in person, with literally from his feature pages "Cassian at War" (Neue Freie Presse, September 6, 1914) and " Germany stands on "(25.8.1914) is quoted, and in several articles in the torch .

“The readers […] were of the opinion that I had invented the sentences that I put in Hans Müller's mouth. As if something like that could be invented. "

- "The Torch" 546, July 1920

In the 1920s he went to Hollywood, where several films were made based on his originals (among others by Ernst Lubitsch ), returned to Berlin and became chief dramaturge of the film company UFA , where he was responsible for classics such as Der Kongress tanzt (director: Erik Charell , music: Werner Richard Heymann ).

Müller achieved lasting success in the field of music theater. He was involved in two of the most successful operettas of the 20th century: On the one hand, the libretto to Oscar Straus ' Ein Walzertraum (1907) is based on one of his literary models, and on the other hand, he himself was a co-author of Ralph Benatzky's Im Weißen Rößl (1930) for that he edited the comedy template by Blumenthal and Kadelburg and inserted the figure of Emperor Franz Joseph. Müller also wrote the libretti for Violanta (1916) and Das Wunder der Heliane (1927, after Hans Kaltneker ) for Erich Wolfgang Korngold , the son of his close friend Julius Korngold .

From 1930 he lived in Einigen on Lake Thun in Switzerland with his partner Nikolaus Schwarz; he then made the place name part of his artist name.

In 1945, Müller rarely returned to Vienna, where Der Helfer Gottes (with Albert Bassermann as Henri Dunant , his first role after returning from emigration) and Eugenie were performed at the Volkstheater in 1948 .

Works

Müller's work is characterized by effectively secure dramatic and often has a strong homoerotic undertone (about the ecstatic love fantasies of Violanta or frivolous scenes in the White Horse Inn .) This could be the view of Arthur Maibach one reason be that posterity largely by Muller turned away because his sensual aesthetics did not fit into the "staid" 1950s. But also a performance of the piece Die Flamme 1980 was judged by the critics as out of date.

Without ever having been a soldier himself, Müller advanced to the front line reporter in the First World War with patriotic battle descriptions .

“We are still thinking of his feature section shortly after the outbreak of war, in which Mr. Müller described with his own irresistible grace how he fought as a lieutenant in Russian Poland [...]. We in our simplicity really believed at that time that Hans the dreamer had entered; soon found out that Hans Müller was still responsible in Viennese salons. But the economy had changed the war and so Mr. Müller wrote a soul upswing. "

- Arbeiter-Zeitung , February 16, 1917

In 1916, the historical drama "Kings" at the Burgtheater experienced such a triumphant success in the wake of patriotic enthusiasm that it was soon played in all German-speaking theaters. After a performance of the drama in Munich, Müller appeared on stage in uniform. Because of this, he became a target in particular for criticism from Karl Kraus, who targeted Müller's pompous style, riddled with precious anachronisms, in the “Fackel”. Müller brought an honorary libel suit, but had to withdraw it and admit that he had never been at the front.
