Einigen is a formerly independent municipality and since 1834 a district ( Bäuert ) of the municipality of Spiez in the canton of Bern in Switzerland with 1605 inhabitants (as of 2012). Since the Kander correction, the Kander has flowed through the farming area into Lake Thun.

history

Some were first mentioned as Ceningen in 1228 and was known as Zeinigen until the 18th century . The Bäuert consists of the village of Einigen, individual farms and Taunerhäuser on Allmendland . Some belonged to the high and low court district of Spiez, which passed from the barons of Strättlingen to von Bubenberg in 1338 , to von Diesbach in 1506, to von Erlach in 1516 and to the canton of Bern in 1839. The parish of Einigen was merged into the parish of Spiez in 1761, but was able to keep the church and school. A request for renewed independence in 1798 was unsuccessful and in 1834 some became part of the community of Spiez.

Originally, the inhabitants were mainly employed in vine, fruit and arable farming as well as fishing. Because of the derivation of the Kander in 1714, a new road to Thun and a bridge over the Kandergraben had to be built. The population hardly increased from 1764 (187 inhabitants) to 1900 (290). It was not until the 20th century that better transport connections through the Bern-Lötschberg-Simplon Railway in 1906, the Schifflandesteg (Ländte) in 1929 and the A6 led to new employment opportunities (Kanderkieswerk 1913, tourism, small businesses) and strong population growth.

During the Second World War , the Einigen locking point was the first to be closed at the Reduite entrance on the left bank of Lake Thun. The Kandergraben (Kander penetration) was included in the barrier as a natural obstacle. It is considered a military historical monument of national importance.

Ländte some before renovation (2015)

Since 2007, some of the ships of BLS Schifffahrt Berner Oberland have not been approached because the landing stage (Ländte) was in a desolate condition. The Schiffländte Einigen association, founded in 2014, collected money so that the renovation could take place. Since the departure weekend of 2016 and in the summer schedule, the Ländte Einigen has been approached by BLS ships again.

church

The church of Einigen is a former pilgrimage church , which was consecrated to Saint Michael and is first mentioned in 1228 . The existing church dates from the 10th to 11th centuries, but its origins go back to the 7th century . According to the Strättliger Chronicle , it is said to have been the mother church of the so-called "twelve Thunersee churches" Amsoldingen , Aeschi , (Einigen,) Frutigen , Hilterfingen , Leissigen , Scherzligen , Sigriswil , Spiez , Thierachern , Thun and Uttigen . The church was renovated in 1954/55 by the architect and sculptor Erwin Friedrich Baumann .
