Desiderio da Settignano (* around 1430 in Settignano , Tuscany ; † January 16 (?) January 1464 in Florence ) was an Italian sculptor .

Life

Desiderio came from a family of sculptors. Nothing more is known about his youth and training; Donatello's influence is not in doubt. In 1453 he joined the Guild of Stone and Wood Sculptors in Florence. He developed into one of the masters of the Italian Renaissance ; the rilievo stiacciato ( bas-relief ) became his trademark. His technical ability in handling the marble - and other materials - was unmatched; his originality and his fine feeling for nature can be seen most clearly in his soulful portrait busts .

A masterpiece of naturalistic portraiture of the 15th century is the marble bust of Marietta Strozzi (mentioned by Vasari with praise). His main work is the tomb of the humanist and State Secretary Carlo Marsuppini in Santa Croce in Florence, which stands out both with its charming ornaments and the characteristics of the deceased resting on the sarcophagus. A marble tabernacle in San Lorenzo in Florence is just as important in the moderate ornamentation and fine execution of the figures and is considered one of the masterpieces of the 15th century.
