action

In 1463 Paris was besieged by the Burgundians. The population begins against the weak King Louis XI. to revolt who fails to adequately defend the city. The Grand Marshal Thibault has secretly allied himself with the Burgundians and plans to assassinate the king and his niece Katherine. The niece is saved by the singing vagabond leader Fraçnois Villon, who soon falls in love with the noble princess.

Ludwig is prophesied by his astrologer that a vagabond will free the city. The king sneaks into a tavern in disguise. There he hears François singing mocking songs against the king. The ruler is enraged and has the vagabond leader and the girl Huguette, who is in love with François, imprisoned. The king orders that François sit on the throne for a week and replace him. After that he is supposed to be executed. François accepts the trade.

Thibault leads the vagabonds to free François. The king is supposed to be killed during the liberation operation, but Thibault's plan fails and Huguette is accidentally killed. François lets the Burgundians attack, which then actually withdraw. At the end of the week, Katherine wants to trade her life for François. But the king gives in before the assembled population and guarantees the couple peace and freedom.
