The best present is a German silent film in one act by Ernst Lubitsch from 1916. It is considered lost .

content

On the occasion of her birthday, a young woman sends out invitations to her numerous admirers: She wants to marry the one among them who gives her the best present. While the numerous admirers appear, Ernst Lubitsch's figure comes almost too late: Since he has lost a button on his shirt, he has to roller-skate to see his lover in order to show up in time.

The effort was worth it, as he gives the best present of all: a quarter of a pound of butter .

production

In 1916 a total of four Lubitsch films were shown in the cinemas: Schuhpalast Pinkus , The Mixed Women's Choir , The Most Beautiful Gift and, as recently as December 1916, The GmbH Tenor .

The most beautiful present was shot in the Ufa-Union-Ateliers Tempelhof near Berlin . The buildings are by Kurt Richter. In August 1916, censorship banned the film from young people. The world premiere took place on November 24, 1916 at the Kammerlichtspiele Berlin . No surviving copy is known of the film, which was 233 meters long.
