The Blouse King is a German silent film in three acts by Ernst Lubitsch from 1917. It is one of the director's fragmentary films.
content
Sally Katz is a clerk in a fashion department. Dismissed for cheeky behavior, he finds a new job through an advertisement at the blouse dealer Lippmann. As a result, he achieved record sales with wit and chutzpah and left the competition behind. Sally becomes a partner in the company. The boss's nasty daughter makes advances for him. Lippmann asked Sally not to start a relationship with his daughter. Instead, he offers him the executive chair and Sally agrees, since he has long since secretly fallen in love with the clothing maker.
production
The shooting took place from April to May 1917 in the Ufa-Union-Ateliers Berlin-Tempelhof . The scenery was created by Paul Leni . The film premiered on November 2, 1917 in the UT Kurfürstendamm in Berlin .
The surviving fragment of the film shows around a third of the entire work.
The Blouse King was one of a series of films in which the figure of Sally portrayed by Lubitsch appears. Often, for example, this figure came as a small apprentice from a small town to a large city and subsequently rose socially. Examples are 1916 Schuhpalast Pinkus with Lubitsch as Sally Pinkus and 1916 Der GmbH-Tenor with Lubitsch as Sally. Further figures with the name Sally , which are represented by Lubitsch, can be found in 1918 in Der Rodelkavalier (Sally Pinner), Der Fall Rosentopf (Sally) and Meyer from Berlin (Sally Meyer).
criticism
The contemporary critics praised the situation comedy of the film and the humor “in the subtitles, which is kept in the tone of the clothing and is laughed at heartily”.
