From the previously loose collaboration between Sascha Kolowrat-Krakowsky and Oskar Meßter , the “Oesterreichisch-Hungarian Sascha-Meßter-Film Gesellschaft mbH”, later Sascha-Meßter-Film , emerged on April 4th .

May 15 : The silent film The Floor Walker ( The shop supervisor ) by and starring Charlie Chaplin appears in the United States. It is Chaplin's first film for Mutual Films . The action climaxes in a turbulent chase on an escalator .

The documentary and propaganda film The Battle of the Somme will open in British cinemas on August 21 . It was seen by around 20 million people in six weeks - almost half of the British population at the time.
