- January 7th : William KL Dickson films his assistant Fred Ott sneezing . On the one hand, this creates the first closeup picture. Fred Ott's Sneeze is also the oldest film registered with the United States Copyright Office and protected with a paper print.
- April 14th : The Kinetoscope Parlor by the Holland brothers opens on New York's Broadway , a forerunner of cinema with ten display cases for viewing films developed by William K. L. Dickson for the inventor Thomas Alva Edison . The films, which can be up to 30 seconds long, can only be viewed by one person at a time. One of the first films to be screened at the opening is the Blacksmith Scene produced by Dickson the previous year , making it the first commercially available film.
- With the Dickson Experimental Sound Film , William KL Dickson tries to record a sound recording synchronously with a film recording. However, the project does not get beyond the experimental stage.
- William KL Dickson produces the short films Bucking Broncho , in which rodeo rider Lee Martin from the Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show appears in front of the camera for the first and last time in this film, and Carmencita about a dancer.
- In Paris, the Lumière brothers were working on the cinématographe , which was patented the following year.
- Étienne-Jules Marey is making the short film Falling Cat .
