life and work

Fernando de Fuentes began his career as a film editor and assistant director in the 1920s. In 1932 he made his first film El anónimo . This made him the first Mexican who had the opportunity to make a film for the Compañia Nacional Productora de Peliculas . With El prisionero trece , shot the following year , de Fuentes dedicated a feature film to the Mexican Revolution , which had not been received in this way before. Also in 1933 he made El compadre Mendoza , with which he deepened the revolutionary theme. The film was of great thematic importance for Mexico, because it addressed the disillusionment with the corrupted ideals of the revolution. Although El compadre Mendoza was not recognized internationally at the time of its publication, it received positive reception in later years, as did Fernando de Fuentes, through international criticism. In 1935 de Fuentes had another film about the revolution follow with Vámonos con Pancho Villa ( Let's go with Pancho Villa ). In the film, he staged this as a disruptive event that overwhelmed his uncomprehending participants. In doing so, he made clear the dichotomy between the ideals of the revolution and its chaotic, contradicting appearance. Fernando de Fuentes was supported by the state when shooting this film. This provided a complete train , a regiment of regular troops, artillery , uniforms, horses and other military material. In addition, the state ultimately bore the high production costs of the film.

With Allá en el Rancho Grande ( Back on the large yard ) shot Fernando de Fuentes the first internationally successful film from Mexico. It was the director's most popular film and marked a turning point in the orientation of the Mexican film industry. In this film, de Fuentes referred to the Hollywood westerns , but captured typical Mexican images and moods in his film. In addition, he did not copy the American cowboy , but referred to the Mexican charros . In doing so, he also showed other filmmakers the way to emancipate themselves from the adaptations of foreign films and topics and to shoot original Mexican films. With this film, Fernando de Fuentes also founded the Comedia ranchera genre , in which many more films on this topic were to follow. With the film La gallina clueca , de Fuentes also worked on the theme of mother, which is widespread in Mexican films, in an outstanding way. After the success of Allá en el Rancho Grande , however, he increasingly made films with a commercial cut and less focus on artistic value. In 1942 he became director and producer for the newly established film studio of Jesús Grovas . In 1945 he helped found the Diana Films production company.

In 1992 Fernando de Fuentes was posthumously awarded the Mexican Ariel de Oro Honorary Film Prize for his lifetime achievement.
