Rescued from an Eagle's Nest

2. / 7 January : James Searle Dawley turns the eight minute film Rescued from an Eagle's Nest , in the Henry B. Walthall his film debut and David Wark Griffith has his first starring role. The first theatrical screening will take place on January 18th .
April 19 : The first film magazine appears in Germany with the Lichtbild-Bühne .
DW Griffith made his debut as a director with the twelve-minute silent drama The Adventures of Dollie , which premiered on July 14th .

August 17th : The first well-known animated film Fantasmagorie , created by Émile Cohl , premieres at the Théatre du Gymnase in Paris.
November 17th : The French silent film L'Assassinat du duc de Guise ( The Assassination of the Duke of Guise ) by Frères Lafitte has its world premiere. It is regarded as a milestone in film history because it becomes apparent that a film makes new demands on staging and acting and because it is the first film to feature original music that was specially composed for the film by Camille Saint-Saëns and recorded on gramophone records . The main roles of the 15-minute period film playing famous actors of the Comédie-Française .
December: Thomas Edison founds the Motion Picture Patents Company to control the production and distribution of films and related patents.

The "Tonbild" policeman song with Henry Bender in the main role is produced.
The second Austrian film magazine, Der Österreichische Komet , appears for the first time.
According to Heinz Hanus, the first Austrian feature film should have been made: From step to step .
