Arne Frode Rinnan (born November 11, 1940 ) was known as the captain of the Tampa , a Norwegian cargo ship of the Wilh shipping company . Wilhelmsen . In the course of a rescue of boat people , there was a violent diplomatic dispute between the Norwegian and Australian governments, the so-called Tampa affair .

Tampa affair

End of August 2001 rescued Captain Arne Rinnan on the Tampa 438 boat people , mainly volatile Hazara from the Taliban -beherrschten Afghanistan . The asylum seekers were on a sinking wooden boat near the Australian Christmas Island . The Australian government did not want to grant asylum to these shipwrecked people and instructed the captain to transport them to Indonesia, which is twice as far away. The boat people resist and after several changes of course, Arne Rinnan finally headed for Christmas Island and anchored in front of her 12-mile zone . There, the Australian government initially refused any help. After Rinnan had anchored for days, he declared his ship a state of emergency and steered the Tampa into Australian waters. The Australian government then ordered 45 soldiers from the Special Air Service to board the ship. The asylum seekers were then transferred to the Australian troop transport HMAS Manoora . So that the boat people could not apply for asylum in Australia, they were brought there at the instigation of the Australian government and after consultation with the governments of Nauru and New Zealand.

On World Refugee Day 2002, Arne Rinnan and his team and his shipping company Wilhelm Wilhelmsen were awarded the Nansen Medal by the UN Refugee Agency UNHCR for their moral courage and their commitment in the spirit of international principles of rescuing castaways despite threats from the Australian government.
