The World Refugee Day is one of the United Nations equipped of action, the most since 2001 on June 20 takes place.

History of World Refugee Day

Before 2001, many countries had already celebrated their own national refugee days. The individual bishops' conferences partly set other days, for example in Latin America October 12, the day of the conquest of America. On December 4, 2000, the UN General Assembly declared June 20 to be World Refugee Day by resolution 55/76 on the upcoming 50th anniversary of the founding of the UNHCR . This date was chosen because June 20 had already been Africa Refugee Day in many countries .

Every year on World Refugee Day, the UNHCR publishes an annual report. According to this, over 51 million people were displaced by the end of 2013, including more than 33 million men, women and children in their own country (“internally displaced persons”). The number of refugees had thus reached the highest level since the Second World War . The six million year-on-year increase was mainly caused by the war in Syria . There was also a significant increase in displacement and displacement in Africa, especially in the Central African Republic and South Sudan . The main receiving countries for refugees are Pakistan , Iran and Lebanon .
