Gerhard Luchterhandt

Gerhard Luchterhandt (* 1964 in Detmold ) is a German music theorist , church musician and organist .

Gerhard Luchterhandt is the brother of Manfred Luchterhandt and studied after graduating from the City College math, history and music in Marburg and Hanover , among others, with Ulrich braking unit (organ), Heinz Henning (conducting), Diether de la Motte and Alfred Koerppen (composition / music theory ). He completed his training with the state examination for teaching at grammar schools, the church music A-exam, the diploma in music theory / composition and the concert exam in the organ. He did his doctorate with Rudolf Frisius on Arnold Schönberg's concept of tonality.

In 1993 he was first prize winner at the Kassel organ competition as part of the Days of New Music.

From 1993 to 1997 Gerhard Luchterhandt was cantor at the St. Katharinen Church in Osnabrück and artistic director of the Osnabrück Bach Choir. In 1997 he changed to Almut Rößler's successor as cantor at the Johanneskirche in Düsseldorf , where, in addition to Bach's work, the area of ​​new music and organ improvisation was a focus of his work in numerous concerts. In 1998 he organized the “Düsseldorfer Messiaentage” and from 1998 to 2000 performed the entire Bach organ work in the Johanneskirche.

After teaching organ and harmony at the Hanover University of Music and Drama from 1990 to 1997, he was appointed to the Heidelberg University of Church Music in 1999 , where he has been professor of composition, music theory and organ improvisation since 2000. Since 2003 he has also been teaching the subjects of organ and music theory at the Mannheim University of Music. He also works as a church musician at the Christ Church in Heidelberg , where he looks after the historic Walcker organ from 1903. In 2012, he was awarded the Baden Church Music Prize for helping to restore them. He also teaches music theory at the Basel School of Music .

In addition to classical organ improvisation, Gerhard Luchterhandt also performs as a jazz organist and director of the jazz vocal ensemble Chili con Choir , which he founded. He plays on an original Hammond B3 organ.
