The University of Church Music Heidelberg or its predecessor, the Evangelical Church Music Institute Heidelberg , (short: KI), was founded in 1931 by Hermann Meinhard Poppen to improve the church music education of the Baden regional church .
history
The model was the Church Music Institute in Leipzig , where Poppen had previously studied, including with the founder of the institute there, the organist Karl Straube . In Heidelberg all church music subjects ( organ playing and other instrumental subjects , choir conducting , singing ) as well as theoretical subjects ( harmony , counterpoint , figured bass , stylistics ) in several courses were offered. Initially housed in building 62 , a new building was planned in Hildastraße from 1965, which could be moved into in 1971 and is still in use today.
After Poppen's death in 1956, Herbert Haag took over the management of the institute until 1973. Further directors were Wolfgang Herbst, Hermann Schäffer and Bernd Stegmann (since 2006). Lecturers at the institute included Wolfgang Fortner , Helmut Tramnitz , Bruno Penzin , Wolfgang Dallmann (1958–1989), Heinz Werner Zimmermann , Kurt Bossler , Gerhard Wagner , Rolf Schweizer and Martin Sander .
Currently teaching here include Gerhard Luchterhandt , Carsten Klomp , Michael Gerhard Kaufmann , Johannes Matthias Michel , Stefan Göttelmann , Christiane Michel-Ostertun , Gunther Martin Göttsche and Jan Wilke .
