facts and figures

With around 6,600 students (as of 2014), 24 bachelor's degree programs in the business and technology faculties and almost 2,000 partner companies nationwide, the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University (DHBW ) Mannheim is the largest of a total of eight locations under the umbrella of the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University and one of the most popular providers of dual study programs in Germany. With over 1000 degrees in economics each year, the DHBW Mannheim also has the largest number of business administration graduates in Germany.

Like the vocational academy from which it emerged, the DHBW Mannheim combines a scientific university degree with entrepreneurial practice: every three months, the students switch between university and training company. Studies at DHBW Mannheim are nationally and internationally accredited and have the same status as other colleges and universities. Currently, the courses on offer include business administration, computer science, engineering, media and business informatics.

history

On October 1, 1974, the vocational academies in Mannheim and Stuttgart started as part of a pilot project with the fields of industry, trade, insurance and electrical engineering. The aim was to transfer the dual system into the tertiary education sector . At that time, 42 students in the fields of business and technology were being trained in 16 companies in Mannheim. In 1982 the “Law on the University of Cooperative Education in the State of Baden-Württemberg” came into force. This ended the pilot project and the vocational academy became the standard facility.

According to the decision of the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of September 29, 1995, the graduates of a vocational academy were equal to those of a technical college with regard to the professional regulations . On October 1, 2006, all courses were converted to the accredited Bachelor's degree. After an additional evaluation of the ZeVA in 2008, these were even accredited with 210 ECTS points instead of 180 as is usual at universities and other colleges. In addition, BA students in Mannheim who received a diploma (BA) or a bachelor's degree could acquire a bachelor's-with-honors degree (abbr .: Hons.) From the British Open University. In order to obtain the English Bachelor's degree, a student from the University of Cooperative Education had to enroll at the Open University UK at the beginning of the last academic year. Representatives of the Open University UK (so-called External Examiners) are represented on the examination boards of the professional academies. The bachelor's degree awarded by the Open University is an academic degree .

According to the university ranking by Wirtschaftswoche magazine (11/2007), the Mannheim University of Cooperative Education was one of the universities in the field of business administration and industrial engineering recommended by human resource managers. It is the only professional academy in the university ranking that until then only included universities and technical colleges.

On March 1, 2009, it became a location of the newly founded Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University (DHBW) and thus also achieved de jure university status: The Cooperative State University now awards nationally and internationally recognized academic degrees and is mandated to conduct cooperative research. As a partner in the Graduate School Rhein-Neckar (GSRN), it offers extra-occupational postgraduate courses.
