The Baden-Württemberg Police University (HfPolBW) has been responsible for the entire training of the Baden-Württemberg police force since the beginning of 2014 . As part of the structural reform of the police force , the academic training as well as the performance of the tasks of basic and advanced training, operational training, leadership training, police missions abroad and personnel recruitment were bundled under the umbrella of the university.

The university with the institutes of advanced training, education and training as well as management and personnel recruitment comprises a staff including students and civil servants in training of over 3,000 people. It currently has a capacity of around 1300 study places on the Villingen-Schwenningen campus and employs 61 full-time lecturers in four faculties ( operational and management sciences , criminal sciences , law and social sciences ).

In application-oriented teaching, the students are taught the scientific knowledge and methods as well as the practical professional skills and knowledge that are required to fulfill the tasks of the higher service of the police and criminal police.

In addition to training for the higher-level police enforcement service of the state of Baden-Württemberg, promotion officers for the higher-level police enforcement service also complete their first year of study here as part of the course in public administration - police management ; the other years of study are completed at the German Police University in Münster .

Further main areas of activity are research, training and further education for the police force in the state of Baden-Württemberg, as well as recruiting tasks.

The Baden-Württemberg Police University was founded in 1979 under the name of the Villingen-Schwenningen University of Applied Sciences , making it the oldest institution of its kind in Germany. In the course of the general renaming of all universities of applied sciences in Baden-Württemberg to "University", the name of University of Applied Sciences Villingen-Schwenningen - University of Police was also changed here. As part of the structural reform of the police, it was finally named "University for Police Baden-Württemberg".

In contrast to other universities, it is not a corporation under public law ; it has no legal capacity of its own . Furthermore, it is not the Ministry of Science , but the Ministry of the Interior that is responsible for supervision.
