History of the Stuttgart police

Until the end of 1972, the Stuttgart police were communal and on January 1, 1973, they were transferred to the service of the state of Baden-Württemberg. The then police chief Paul Rau thus lost his double function: The public order office remained as an element of the police authority with the city of Stuttgart, the police chief became chief of the law enforcement police. When the police moved from town to country, the municipal police officers lost their blue uniforms and exchanged them for the national green cloth. The change of employer became legally effective on January 1, 1973. However, the official handover was not completed until January 15, 1973. The then Lord Mayor of Stuttgart Dr. Arnulf Klett handed over "his police" to Interior Minister Karl Schiess in the large conference room of the town hall. One of the essential prerequisites for nationalization was that the Stuttgart police had direct access to the Ministry of the Interior. This was justified with the special police requirements in the state capital. With the then State Police Directorate Stuttgart II, one of the largest state authorities in Baden-Württemberg was created. It was on an equal footing with the other state police departments in Stuttgart I, Freiburg, Karlsruhe and Tübingen. The current office in the former Robert Bosch Hospital on Hahnemannstrasse was only moved into a few years after the nationalization between September 1977 and April 1978. With the implementation of the administrative reform, the State Police Headquarters Stuttgart II was renamed the Police Headquarters Stuttgart on May 1, 2005. The direct connection to the Ministry of the Interior remained untouched. From October 18, 2010, the new blue uniforms began to be issued at the Stuttgart police headquarters. The changeover took about a year. During the police reform of January 1, 2014, the Stuttgart police headquarters were partially restructured in order to ensure that all regional police headquarters were set up uniformly across the country. As part of the 2020 structural reform, the police headquarters were again reclassified on January 1, 2020. The previous three directorates (police station directorate, traffic police directorate and criminal police directorate) have been restructured into two directorates: the protective police directorate, into which the traffic inspection has been integrated, and the criminal police directorate.

Social networks

The Stuttgart Police Headquarters has been active in the social networks Facebook and Twitter since December 2011 and January 2012 , making it one of the first police stations in Germany . Since March 1, 2018, the Baden-Württemberg police are also represented on Instagram . The social media team at the Stuttgart Police Headquarters is responsible for coordinating and editing the posts.

building

The police headquarters building on Hahnemannstrasse was initially a hospital . The clinic was opened on April 10, 1940 as the Robert Bosch Hospital with a focus on homeopathy; Hahnemannstrasse is named after Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of homeopathy. The hospital moved to its new location on Bergheide in 1973. The former clinic building has been the headquarters of the police since 1978. Until its renovation in 2008, the outside of the building had remained almost unchanged for decades. In October 2017, the police headquarters received an extension that houses the new command and situation center.
