The Arnulf-Klett-Platz is a place in Stuttgart . It acts as a station forecourt for Stuttgart Central Station and is named after the former Mayor of Stuttgart Arnulf Klett .

location

The square is crossed by up to seven lanes. As part of the Stuttgart City Ring , it connects Heilbronner Strasse / Friedrichstrasse ( B 27 ) with Konrad-Adenauer-Strasse / Willy-Brandt-Strasse ( B 14 ).

The Arnulf-Klett-Platz extends in an east-west direction. In the north it is almost completely flanked by the listed building of Stuttgart Central Station. The south side of the square is characterized by the Steigenberger Hotel Graf Zeppelin and, above all, the Hindenburg building . In the south-east, Königstrasse joins Arnulf-Klett-Platz. Opposite is the entrance to the middle palace garden . To the east, the square turns into Schillerstrasse.

Velcro passage and connection to local public transport

The Klett passage is located under the Arnulf-Klett-Platz . It includes a shopping arcade with 22 shops and also serves as a connection between the main train station, pedestrian zone, S-Bahn and light rail . As part of the name of the main railway station (Arnulf-Klett-Platz) , the square is part of the most important junction in the Stuttgart transport and tariff network . More than 12,000 people change daily between the light rail and regional transport alone (as of 2014). The number of daily passers-by is given as 150,000 (according to information from Stuttgart trams) and 300,000 (according to information from business people).

The Klett-Passage was opened in the spring of 1976. At the opening, the city's 29 shops by ordinance to open until 10 p.m. was considered a minor revolution. When it opened, the Klettpassage was considered the most modern underground shopping arcade in Germany. At times, owner-managed specialist shops dominated. It is now considered a focus of crime. The construction costs of 93 million DM were borne by the federal government, the state and the city (15 percent).

The traffic calming of Schillerstrasse, which is planned for 2018, will likely weaken the function of the Klettpassage. In this context, the city and SSB are examining a renewal of the passage. An underground bicycle parking garage is also being considered as part of the redesign.

history

An underground bunker was built in 1940 as a public air raid shelter under the square, which at that time was still called Hindenburgplatz, with entrances from the main train station and the Hindenburg building. On October 8, 1943, 36 people died in this bunker as a result of an air raid, the vast majority of whom drowned after a water pipe broke. After the end of the Second World War , it served as a restaurant and a cinema was also housed in it. When the tram tunnel and the Klett passage were built from 1970 onwards, the bunker was finally destroyed.

Until 1976 the square was called Schillerstrasse. After completion of the renovation work as a result of the lowering of the tram and the opening of the shopping arcade, both the square and the arcade were named after the long-term mayor Klett, who had died two years earlier. From 2001 to 2007 a district in this area of the city center was called Klettplatz , and since then the name of the district has been the Hauptbahnhof .

In mid-March 2013, preparations began for the conversion of the square for Stuttgart 21 , which should go into operation on May 5, 2013. The relocations are to create space in the middle of Heilbronner Straße in three construction stages by October 2013 for a construction site in the middle of the street. The intersection is used by over 100,000 vehicles every working day. The Arnulf-Klett-Platz itself is used by up to 50,000 vehicles every day.
