Thomas Züfle (born July 23, 1955 , † June 16, 2013 between Sulz am Eck and Jettingen ), last resident in Jettingen, was a German police officer . From 2011 to 2013 he was police chief at the police headquarters in Stuttgart .

Züfle began his career in 1973 with the riot police in Göppingen . At the end of the 1970s he worked in the Stuttgart police headquarters, then at the State Criminal Police Office and in the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of the Interior, and as a trainer for Afghan police officers in Kabul .

From January 2007 to May 2011 he headed the Tübingen police department . As the police chief in Stuttgart, he was responsible for around 2,600 employees.

Züfle took over this position under difficult circumstances. His predecessor Siegfried Stumpf led the police operation in the palace gardens on September 30, 2010 . Because of the violent clashes during this mission, this day went down in the history of the protest against Stuttgart 21 as Black Thursday . The trust of parts of the public in the police leadership was shattered afterwards. Stumpf resigned from the office of police chief in April 2011 for health reasons. Züfle successfully endeavored to improve communication with citizens and to de-escalate . He drew the conclusion from Black Thursday that police operations should be better prepared and that the principle of proportionality should be upheld. Instead of using water cannons and forming police cauldrons, he relied on reinforced anti-conflict teams and direct addressing of the demonstrators. However , he charged 40 euros for every hour of work commenced for those who were sitting on the block , who carried themselves away from the officials. The further disputes about Stuttgart 21 were non-violent.

On June 16, 2013 Thomas Züfle died in a traffic accident.
