The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (proper spelling: . Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in Germany and shortly FAZ or FAZ ) is a German nationwide subscription - daily newspaper . It is published by Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung GmbH , 93.7% of which is owned by the Fazit Foundation (non-profit GmbH). The other shares are held by the publishers , who also determine the line of the newspaper. The sold circulation is 201,408 copies, a decrease of 49.7 percent since 1998.

profile

The FAZ is generally regarded as a bourgeois - conservative medium. In his account of the history of the FAZ in 2019, however, the historian Peter Hoeres pointed to the traditionally broad spectrum of opinion within the editorial team: “At no point has it been a homogeneously conservative newspaper. Rather, it broke with the German state fixation and cartel tradition in economic life from the beginning, it soon joined the West politically without reservation and also opened up emphatically to western cultural modernity. Since the 1960s, it has also housed journalists who were decidedly left-wing or left-wing. "

According to a study by Literaturkritik.at appeared in 2014 in the FAZ 447  Fiction - reviews with a length of more than 500 words what their special status as a "flagship of German feature pages review" confirm that despite a decline in previous years, "still with Most of the meeting texts are published at all ”.

With over 90 domestic and foreign correspondents reporting exclusively for the FAZ, the newspaper's network of correspondents is one of the largest in the world. In metropolises there are several specialized foreign correspondents for politics, business and feature pages, for example in Brussels (4), London (4), Madrid (2), Moscow (2), New York (3), Paris (2), Beijing (2 ), Rome (2), Washington (2), Vienna (2). In Germany, the FAZ (in addition to the editorial office of the Rhein-Main-Zeitung ) has editorial offices in Berlin, Bonn, Dresden, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Hanover, Kassel, Leipzig, Munich, Stuttgart and Wiesbaden.

story

Konrad Adenauer reads the FAZ edition from August 7, 1961

The foundation of the FAZ in 1949 goes back to a resolution of the Economic Policy Society (Wipog) , an association founded two years earlier by entrepreneurs who wanted to see their interests represented more strongly in public. Founding editors of the FAZ were Hans Baumgarten , Erich Dombrowski , Karl Korn , Paul Sethe and Erich Welter . Some of the editors of the FAZ had previously worked for the Frankfurter Zeitung, which was banned in 1943, and for the Allgemeine Zeitung in Mainz . The first issue of the newspaper appeared on November 1, 1949. On the front page of this issue it read under the heading “Newspaper for Germany”: “Today our readers have the first issue of the 'Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung' in front of them. This sheet continues the journalistic work that was started in Mainz with the 'Allgemeine Zeitung'. But at the same time it marks the beginning of a new work. "

The designer of the Frankfurter Allgemeine lettering, which is still the typographical trademark of the newspaper today , was the commercial artist and type artist Regine May , who worked as a fashion illustrator at FAZ from 1950 to 1975.

According to its own account, the newspaper does not see itself as a direct successor to the Frankfurter Zeitung . In the first edition one could read: “From the fact that some of our employees were formerly part of the editorial team of the 'Frankfurter Zeitung', it has often been concluded that an attempt was being made to succeed this newspaper. Such an assumption misjudges our intentions. Like everyone else, we admired the high quality of this paper [...] But respect for an excellent performance does not mean the desire to copy it. ”However, the Frankfurter Zeitung title was protected by trademark law by the FAZ . Years later, the FAZ brand was protected .

The FAZ was printed in Mainz until September 30, 1950. The first request to have the FAZ produced in the Societäts-Druckerei, leased from the Frankfurter Rundschau , was made in 1949, but Kurt Simon, who was reinstated in his rights as co-owner of the printing works and the Frankfurter Zeitung, refused this on the grounds that the publisher Erich Welter and Paul Sethe were too committed to the National Socialist goals. Later, an agreement was reached and from autumn 1950 the FAZ was printed in the Societäts printing house. In 1987, a new editorial building was completed in Hellerhofstrasse, which the architect A C. Walter had planned. In 1989 the Fazit Foundation took over the majority of the Societäts-Druckerei.

In addition to the founders of the publishing house with integrity and managerial staff, the 1950s were also characterized by a number of managerial employees who were exposed to the Nazi regime. The publishing manager Viktor Muckel , former head of the NS district in Düsseldorf, and Erwin Finkenzeller , propagandist of the SS standard Kurt Egger , joined the management level of the FAZ during World War II . While Finkenzeller was responsible for the advertising business, Muckel took over the areas of sales and advertising, initially as an "independent publishing consultant" and then as one of the publishing directors. The FAZ advertising slogan " There's always a clever head behind it " comes from him .

The makers of the FAZ (and many readers) resisted a revision of the rather simple, calm appearance for a long time. Cover images in the FAZ traditionally remained the exception and the introduction of color information graphics and photographs was controversial. Since October 5, 2007, the newspaper has been appearing in a visually revised, more modern layout : Among other things, the Fraktur headings above the comments and the lines between the individual columns have been omitted . The first page was given a colored cover picture, just like the images in the inside of the newspaper are kept in color if possible. Boxes with increasingly shorter explanations for individual keywords are used more frequently. In doing so, the editorial board reacted to persistent circulation losses.

Since April 20, 2011, the FAZ has also been available as an ePaper on the iPad , and since January 2016 there has also been a digitally adapted and multimedia-enhanced edition of the newspaper.

Economic development

In the 2012 financial year, the publishing company made a loss of 4.3 million euros as a result of the further decline in advertising revenues, after having generated income of 19.3 million euros in the previous year through the sale of assets. In 2013 the deficit continued to rise, and sales also fell. To compensate for this, the number of pages in the newspaper was reduced at the beginning of 2014, which resulted in staff savings in the editorial office. In 2014, the FAZ announced that it would save 20 million euros annually by 2017 and cut up to 200 of 900 jobs. Since 2015, the FAZ has been able to show positive results again thanks to lower costs and stable advertising revenues.

In the course of concentrating on its core competence, the FAZ sold its book publishers Kösel-Verlag and Deutsche Verlags-Anstalt together with Manesse Verlag to the Random House publishing group in September 2005 . In 2006 the FAZ Buch- und Zeitschriftenverlag also sold the art book publisher Prestel . As before, FAZ books appear in the so-called FAZ Institute.

In 2021 it was announced that the Saturday delivery as a test of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung was successful due to sinking sales outlets and problems with Sunday delivery, according to the company, the implementation of the nationwide delivery on Saturday will be fully completed in the 2nd quarter of 2022. The Saturday edition of the FAZ is unaffected, so there will be two newspaper editions from the same publisher on this day in the future.

Social impact

The FAZ plays an opinion-forming role in many socio-political discussions and / or often triggered them. It is classified by journalists as one of the leading German-language media . For example, she was the first to publish important contributions to the debate on the historians' dispute of the 1980s, by Ernst Nolte and Michael Stürmer , among others . Frank Schirrmacher (1959–2014), co-editor since 1994, kicked off the debate about Martin Walser's novel Death of a Critic in 2002 when he refused to preprint the new Walser novel - in an open letter, in detail, explaining what the review was about an unpublished book. With his book The Methuselah Conspiracy , published in 2004, and a series of articles, Schirrmacher took part in the discussion about the aging of German society (see also Demography of Germany ) and the social, economic, political and urban development consequences associated with it. In 2006, an interview that Günter Grass had willingly given to the FAZ caused quite a stir and in which he first publicly reported on his Waffen SS membership shortly before the publication of his memoir When Skinning the Onion . 95 percent of the interviewed employees agreed in terms of content: "Yes, the newspaper is conservative, but I am not."

In the discussion about the spelling reform of 1996 , contributions by FAZ editors and guest authors played an important role. The newspaper not only reported on the developments, but also actively intervened in the debate in favor of the old spelling. After an initial change to the reformed spelling on August 1, 1999, the editorial team returned to the previous spelling after one year (August 1, 2000). After the revision of the rules by the German Spelling Council , the FAZ took over parts of the reform and has been printing since January 1, 2007 according to a house orthography , based on the new German spelling , but with some modifications. By insisting on the "tried and tested" spelling (which Der Spiegel , Axel-Springer-Verlag and Süddeutsche Zeitung temporarily joined in 2005 ), the editors wanted to put pressure on the German spelling council, which they considered coarse To correct errors of reform.

The newspaper's letters to the editor occupy a special position for the socio-political significance of the FAZ , on which prominent discussion participants often speak up.

Journalistic offshoots

FAZ.NET

The FAZ has been operating an independent editorial news portal on the Internet since January 2001. On November 17, 2007, the FAZ website received a changed page layout.

In October 2011 there was a further revision of the layout of FAZ.NET. After this revision, the website will look similar to the print version. FAZ.NET's own, more modern logo gave way to the well-known Fraktur head of the printed newspaper, the trademark that has been established since its first appearance. The presentation of reader comments has also been revised. These were under the article before the changeover and could be rated positively or negatively; After the changeover, the comments were in a separate tab and it was no longer possible to rate reader comments negatively. Reader comments are reviewed by a moderator before they are published.

From 2013 to the end of March 2020, an editor-in-chief was responsible for all digital products at FAZ Mathias Müller von Blumencron held the position until 2018. His successor was Carsten Knop . With the appointment of Knops as publisher of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, the post of “Editor-in-Chief Digital Products” on April 1, 2020 was canceled again.

In June 2015, according to the results of the AGOF digital facts study, FAZ.NET recorded 6.55 million visitors per month. In October 2020, the site had 16.9 million visitors.

editor

The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung is the only newspaper in Germany that has been run by an editorial board since it was founded. The editors are shareholders of Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung GmbH. Your task is to determine the political, economic and cultural line of the paper. You run the newspaper on the collegial principle and are solely committed to your journalistic standards. The Spiegel characterized the unique role as follows:

“To become the editor of the 'Frankfurter Allgemeine', that used to be something. It was a calling the likes of which has never been seen in German journalism. It was almost a crowning act that turned a simple editor into a powerful man. The salary is enormous. The contract is unlimited. The influence: can hardly be overestimated. It was the rise to co-regency in an empire in which the money was constantly flowing in through the advertising department and out again through the editorial team. "

Their names are under the title of the newspaper and on the FAZ.NET homepage. They meet every week for the editors' conference. The chairmanship of the editorial board changes annually.

Sections and supplements

FAZ magazine

The Frankfurter Illustrierte , which was a supplement to the Frankfurter Zeitung in the pre-war period, can be regarded as a forerunner .

The FAZ-Magazin appeared on Fridays from March 7, 1980 to June 25, 1999 as a weekly colored supplement - similar to the Zeit-Magazin - with mainly cultural and biographical topics in a total of 1008 issues. As an independent publishing product, it was last produced by an editorial team of around twenty under Thomas Schröder as editor-in-chief. Johannes Gross wrote a column on a regular basis .

Since February 23, 2013, a FAZ magazine has been published again , which emerged from the fashion and lifestyle magazine Z previously published jointly with the Neue Zürcher Zeitung . It appears twelve times a year, on the second Saturday of the month, and covers the topics of fashion, design, travel, beauty, the art market and cuisine on 80 pages. The editorial for the edition of February 23, 2013 says: “With all the popularity, our supplement, which is enclosed with the newspaper eight times this year, cannot be equated with its predecessor, which was discontinued in 1999, in terms of the frequency of publication, format and range of topics. Times change, so do magazines. We will open new pages with topics related to lifestyle, popular culture and society. ”Unlike the previous magazine, the large-format (278 mm × 400 mm) glossy magazine focuses on lifestyle and luxury and thus serves as an advertising space for products from these areas.

University gazette

The Hochschulanzeiger is a magazine that is published four times a year by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung publishing house. It is aimed specifically at students, university graduates and young professionals who want to find out more about industries and companies, are looking for their future employer or would like tips on how to apply. It can be subscribed to individually or together with a FAZ student subscription. It is also available at the kiosk. Two weeks after the publication date, it will be distributed or displayed free of charge at many universities in Germany and Austria. The widespread circulation of the Hochschulanzeiger is 216,839 copies, of which 99,839 have been sold (IVW 4/2009).

Chrismon

Since 2008, the FAZ has been adding the stapled Chrismon magazine of the evangelical church every month .

Frankfurt anthology

The Frankfurter Anthologie series of articles is a collection of German-language poems with interpretations that was founded by Marcel Reich-Ranicki in 1974 and which still appears in the features section of the Saturday edition to this day.

Pictures and times

Until the end of 2001, Pictures and Times was the gravure supplement to the Saturday edition of the FAZ . It was characterized by longer articles in the feature section (especially literature). The supplement was illustrated in large format in black and white. Particularly noteworthy are the photos by Barbara Klemm , which appeared here regularly. In November 2006, Bilder und Zeiten was at least revived as a name: the new Saturday supplement, however, appeared in normal newspaper printing and with a modernized design. The editor in charge is Andreas Platthaus. Pictures and Times was added as a supplement at the end of 2012; the rubrics previously published there have been included in the features section. The articles that have appeared in the supplement so far are still made available under their old names on the Internet.

Berlin Pages (discontinued)

The Berlin pages were a usually six-page columnist supplement of the FAZ produced in Berlin. The editorial team was headed by Florian Illies . The Berlin pages appeared for the first time on September 1, 1999 and were discontinued in the summer of 2002 after the FAZ's expectation that the supplement would significantly increase the number of Berlin subscribers had not been fulfilled.

Other business areas

The publisher is diversifying its activities in order to generate additional income from its in-house expertise.

Frankfurter Allgemeine Archiv

The FAZ archive set up by Marianne Englert is one of the most extensive press archives in the world with over 45 million articles. His documentaries have a large press database with documents from more than 200 sources as well as specialized knowledge databases. The archive is the newspaper's information center, the primary task of which is to provide the editorial staff with facts and background information. In addition, it offers information and services for external customers (including online archive with articles from 1993, year, country and topic CD-ROMs, audio dossiers, marketing of reprint and usage rights, provision of the online archive for Libraries and businesses, appointment services).

FAZ job market

In the FAZ job market , job advertisements are published in the print editions on Saturdays and Sundays. The vast majority of print advertisements are also published online in the associated job portal. From 2006 to 2016, the online job market was accessible under the domain fazjob.net. The domain was changed to stellenmarkt.faz.net.

FAZ real estate market

The FAZ real estate market is the FAZ's digital real estate portal. The portal was relaunched at the beginning of 2018. Properties within Germany and properties abroad in Europe are offered in the higher price segment.

Classic of comic literature

In 2005 (starting with Superman ) and 2006 (ending with Lucky Luke ) the FAZ published 20 volumes of well-known comic series in collaboration with Panini Comics . They were editorially supervised by the journalist and author Andreas Platthaus .

FAZ forum

The publishing group organizes specialist congresses at which not only external speakers but also editorial staff from the newspaper prepare their specialist knowledge for the participants. The FAZ forum was closed on December 31, 2017. The business will be taken over by Convent Kongresse GmbH.

Frankfurter Allgemeine Business School

Under the title Frankfurter Allgemeine Business School , professional training in business and management is offered.

Competitor

The most important supraregional German rival newspapers are the Süddeutsche Zeitung and Die Welt . The Frankfurter Rundschau was traditionally the regional competitor, but was taken over by the FAZ in the course of the bankruptcy and continued under the umbrella of the publisher until March 2018. The Frankfurter Neue Presse , which appears in the Frankfurt area under various local headers , also belonged to the group. All FAZ shares in the newspapers were taken over in March 2018 by newspaper holding Hessen and publisher Dirk Ippen .

Since April 2021, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and the Süddeutsche Zeitung have been working together on the supraregional advertising market as part of the Republic joint venture with the headquarters in Berlin , in which the two publishers each have a 50% stake. The local and regional markets as well as the digital presence of the publishers remain unaffected.

criticism

Cooperation with the Federal Intelligence Service

The Federal Intelligence Service was surprised in 1968 by the crackdown on the " Prague Spring ". With a "deal" the secret service ensured that the press kept silent about this failure: "In principle, it has been shown in the last few days that our PrSV [special press association] are always ready to stand up for our company in return for good information," said the press department of the BND on August 28, 1968. In addition to the FAZ, Die Welt , Münchner Merkur , Rhein-Zeitung and Bild were also mentioned.

Reporting and commenting on the 2008 financial crisis

A study by the union- Otto Brenner Foundation of Hans-Jürgen Arlt and Wolfgang Storz in March 2010 highlighted the newspaper Handelsblatt , the daily newspaper , Sueddeutsche Zeitung , Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Financial Times Germany , the ARD formats evening news and issues of the day and the news agency DPA on "Business Journalism in Crisis - The Mass Media Dealing with Financial Market Policy". The study comes to the conclusion that the daily updated German business journalism as observer, reporter and commentator of the financial market and the financial market policy up to the open outbreak of the global financial market crisis - with the exception of the taz  - did badly.

Reporting on the EU amendment to copyright law

In its coverage of the copyright reform in the European Union, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung campaigned for the proposed reform in a series of articles to ensure that “creatives and authors receive a wage for the exploitation of their works”. It represents the view of the Federal Association of German Newspaper Publishers (BDZV) and over 240 European associations that represent authors, composers, writers, journalists and photographers. Numerous opponents of the reform have criticized your stance and the type of reporting on the subject.
