After graduating from high school in 1946, Georg Kleinhans began studying natural sciences at the Frankfurt University at the Leibniz Gymnasium in Offenbach am Main . He financed his studies as a photographer and from 1949 he was able to place work in various daily newspapers in the Rhine-Main area. In 1950 Kleinhans made this activity his main job. From 1953 to 1957 he worked as a photographer for the Frankfurter Rundschau . From 1973 to 1993 he worked as a permanent photographer and picture editor for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung . Kleinhans documented the development of Frankfurt, its cityscape and its social life in countless photographs for over forty years.

“He knew the structures and the people, from the Ebbelweiwirt who pressed himself to the chairman of the board, from the sausage seller in the Kleinmarkthalle to the star conductor . At the same time he thought journalistically, he won over and over again new pages and surprising ideas from the eternal annual cycles of local journalism. "

On his 80th birthday, an exhibition with his photographs took place in Frankfurt's Alte Oper in 2006 , which documented the appearance of this building since the 1960s. In 1982 he received the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for his services . Kleinhans was buried in Frankfurt's southern cemetery.
