Mathias Müller from Blumencron

Mathias Müller von Blumencron (born July 23, 1960 in Hamburg ) is a German journalist . He was head of the digital offerings of the Der Spiegel publishing house and former editor-in-chief for the “digital media” division of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung . He is co-editor-in-chief of the Tagesspiegel .

Life

Müller von Blumencron studied law in Hamburg and Kiel. The first legal state examination (1985) followed the legal preparatory service , which he broke off after a year to change to the Hamburg Henri-Nannen-Schule . He successfully completed his training there.

In 1989/90 Müller von Blumencron worked as an editor for the business magazine Capital in Cologne. In 1991 he was first in Zurich, then in Berlin as a correspondent for Wirtschaftswoche .

He had been employed by Spiegel since 1992 . Müller von Blumencron was initially an editor in the "Germany II" department, and from 1996 onwards he was deputy department head. In October 1996 he went to Washington as a business correspondent, and in 1998 he moved to New York. From December 2000 to February or formally until May 2008, he was editor-in-chief of Spiegel Online . On February 5, 2008, he and Georg Mascolo took on the position of Spiegel editor-in-chief, succeeding the dismissed Stefan Aust . In February 2011, he instead took over responsibility for all of the Spiegel brand's digital offerings, including Spiegel Online. On April 9, 2013, Müller von Blumencron and Mascolo were dismissed from Spiegel-Verlag due to "differing views on the strategic direction".

He was voted "Media Man of the Year 2007" by Horizont magazine . Müller von Blumencron was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Johanna Quandt Foundation until he, like Gabriele Fischer and Christoph Keese, responded to the NDR documentary on the family's responsibility for crimes during the Nazi era ( Das Schweigen der Quandts ) resigned from office there.

At the end of June 2013, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung announced that Müller von Blumencron, as editor-in-chief for digital media, would be responsible for the further development of all of the FAZ's digital offerings from October 1, 2013.

Following the World Economic Forum in Davos in 2014, Müller von Blumencron became a member of the Global Commission on Internet Governance , a two-year initiative that aims to present a comprehensive status report on the future of multi-stakeholder Internet administration. Former Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt heads the initiative .

On September 22, 2017 the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung announced that Müller von Blumencron was leaving the newspaper at the end of the year.

On August 21, 2018, the Tagesspiegel announced that Blumencron should take over the management of the Berliner Zeitung during the second half of 2018 together with co-editor-in-chief Lorenz Maroldt .

family

Müller von Blumencron is a council family of what was then the Free State of Basel from the Lake Constance area . The trunk series is first mentioned in 1488 with the carpenter Mathy Muller, who acquired Basel city rights.

Mathias Müller von Blumencron is married to an American. The couple lives in Hamburg and has a daughter.
