The Silence of the Quandts is a documentary by Eric Friedler (editors: Thomas Schreiber and Doris J. Heinze ) about one of the wealthiest families in Germany. The NDR production was first broadcast on September 30, 2007 in the ARD Das Erste program. On November 22, 2007, a 90-minute long version of the documentary was broadcast on NDR television .

Content and background

The documentary shows the extent to which the Quandt industrial family was involved in the Nazi system during the Nazi era. This applies in particular to the head of the Günther Quandt family at the time , as he worked as a military economic leader with the Nazis in the Third Reich . Contemporary witnesses prove that the family earned a considerable part of the family wealth on the basis of forced labor in the Second World War . Film recordings and written archive material support the central thesis and prove the involvement of the industrialist Günther Quandt during the Nazi regime. At the time, the Quandt family evidently used economic advantages that the people who were important during the Nazi era had offered them.

Concentration camp prisoners and forced laborers enabled large profits and the expansion of the group. The growth in wealth that the Quandt family achieved between 1933 and 1945 was partly the reason for the rise of the German post-war economy.

Filmmakers Eric Friedler and Barbara Siebert researched for more than five years in archives at home and abroad for Das Schweigen der Quandts . With the help of the documents they have collected, they have succeeded in revealing the origin of parts of the family's fortune bit by bit.

Audience rating, reactions

The 60-minute film saw 1.29 million viewers on September 30, 2007, corresponding to a market share of 13.5 percent. Later believed the historian Ralf Stremmel, of the Historical Archive Krupp of ThyssenKrupp manages to detect serious errors in the film. His contribution published in the Vierteljahrshefte für Zeitgeschichte is considered flawed and controversial. Independent of this, the historian and author Joachim Scholtyseck rates the television documentary as "scientifically unproductive".
