Barbara Klemm (born December 27, 1939 in Münster , Westphalia ) is a German photographer and press photographer .

Life

Barbara Klemm grew up in Karlsruhe , where her father Fritz Klemm worked as a professor at the Karlsruhe Art Academy , and her mother, Antonia, Countess von Westphalen, was also an artist. Fritz Klemm, who had a darkroom , familiarized his daughter with photographic techniques. After attending secondary school, she completed an apprenticeship as a photographer in a Karlsruhe portrait studio with Julie Bauer from 1955 to 1958 , which she completed with a journeyman's examination.

In 1959 she moved to Frankfurt am Main and worked in cliché production and in the photo laboratory of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung . The photographer Wolfgang Haut (1927–2001) inspired her to do freelance work and journalistic photography . She initially worked as a freelancer, from 1970 until her retirement in 2005 as an editorial photographer for the FAZ . Her photographs have also appeared in numerous books, weekly newspapers and magazines.

Her focus is on motifs from politics and the feature pages , her pictures, all black and white, cover a wide spectrum of press photography . Her portraits , landscapes and the cultural impressions of her travels are the outstanding themes in her oeuvre . Barbara Klemm is highlighted in the criticism as a photographer who stands out due to a balanced, often subtly selected image section. Her photos go far beyond the short-lived “ordinary” press photography that illustrates mere daily events. Some of her photos, such as those by Willy Brandt and Leonid Brezhnev or Brandt and Helmut Schmidt , have become iconic images in society's “photographic memory”.

Barbara Klemm is a member of the Berlin Academy of the Arts and honorary professor at the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences . Since 2010 she has been a member of the board of trustees of the Kulturfonds Frankfurt RheinMain . She lives and works in Frankfurt am Main.

Barbara Klemm's work is mainly divided into three subject areas: Germany (landscape, politics, historical events), the world (travel, reports) and art (portraits of artist personalities). She connects these three groups of images through the systematic lack of what is supposedly representative; it captures the respective scene for a moment before or after the official or symbolic act in order to bring out the accidental or individual. With this principle of the just missed moment, she takes a personal look at the event.

In her photos, Klemm has a penchant for the picturesque. She arranges and condenses scenes, creates a tableau with which the individual figures and objects relate to one another and together form a painting. By not only capturing the object with the photos, but also immersing herself in the object, she transcends the bare object and places the image in the place of the actual event. As a result, many of Barbara Klemm's photographs appear more impressive than the historical event they depict.

Quote

Your supreme discipline [...] is the portrait. She has portrayed the big ones and the much bigger ones, but you never see giants at her place, just eccentrics at their workplaces, weird or lively beings in the various stages of self-assertion. [...] Loneliness becomes visible with her as a function of the ambience. The interiors tell their very own story, behind the back of the person pictured. "
