Stefan Moses

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stefan Moses (born August 29, 1928 in Liegnitz , Lower Silesia Province ; † February 3, 2018 in Munich ) was a German photographer living in Munich .

Life

Stefan Moses had to leave school in 1943 due to his Jewish origins and survived a forced labor camp. After training as a photographer in Breslau shortly after the end of the Second World War, he worked as a theater photographer at the National Theater in Weimar . He has lived in Munich since 1950, where he first gained notoriety through his reports for Stern . His documentary portraits of people and professions in West Germany (Germans) and later in East Germany (Farewell and Beginning) made him accessible to a large audience. Moses took people out of their work environment and photographed them in front of a gray linen cloth - this created contemporary documents. Stefan Moses also created portraits of numerous personalities such as Thomas Mann , Ilse Aichinger , Erich Kästner , Peggy Guggenheim , Theodor W. Adorno , Otto Dix , Max Frisch and Martin Mayer . An exhibition about his life's work has been on view in various European cities since 2003. In 2017 the grand master of German portrait photography, the Exilmuseum Berlin Foundation, bequeathed 158 large-format portraits of German emigrants . These were recorded between 1947 and 2003. Stefan Moses was married to the artist Else Bechteler-Moses .
