The former building now houses the Museum of Lacquer Art

The city museum was founded in 1979 and was initially located in the Gerling Villa on Windthorststrasse . The opening took place on August 31, 1982 with the exhibition "The Anabaptists" . Since this building turned out to be too small for the museum to operate, the vacant Althoff department store on Salzstrasse was expanded to become the new location of the museum in 1989 based on designs by architects Rainer Maria Kresing and Christoph von Hausen . In addition to the museum, there are also numerous shops here. The facade of the old department store was preserved and is a listed building. The Museum of Lacquer Art is now located in the Gerling Villa .

The development of the city is illustrated with city and building models, city life is presented through the historic Café Müller from the 1950s and living with the exhibited room by the Münster Art Nouveau artist Bernhard Pankok . After the city museum was founded, a collection of the baroque painter Johann Bockhorst was created with the support of sponsors . Bockhorst was born in Münster around 1604, in Antwerp a close collaborator of Peter Paul Rubens and a friend of Anthony van Dyck .
