The West Prussian State Museum was opened in 1975 in the historic Drostenhof in Münster-Wolbeck . The museum has been located in the Franciscan monastery in Warendorf since the end of 2014 .

task

The museum sees itself as a central facility for the collection, preservation and presentation of West Prussian cultural assets. The historical cultural region of West Prussia should be presented in its exhibitions . There is a partnership with Polish institutions.

At the same time, the museum was a local meeting and cultural center for the Wolbeck district.

history

Drostenhof in Wolbeck, 1975–2012 location of the museum

Since 2004, there have been repeated discussions about merging with the East Prussian State Museum in Lüneburg , combined with the relocation of the location. However, at times a solution at the existing location emerged, by including an unused building of a local financial institution and with the support of sponsors.

Since no agreement could be reached with the owner of Wolbecker Drostenhof regarding a renovation and expansion of the building that meets the minimum standards of ICOM Germany and the German Museum Association , the museum moved its location between 2012 and 2014 to the former Franciscan monastery in Warendorf. In Münster, where the building should have been renovated, energetically refurbished and the necessary accessibility created, the museum was closed at the end of August 2012.

The museum was reopened in Warendorf in December 2014.

Exhibitions

There is a permanent exhibition on the history, art and culture of West Prussia. There are also regular special exhibitions. There is also a reference library, the West Prussia archive and a photo archive.

Branch office

The West Prussian State Museum has set up a branch in Krokowa (Krockow) , a village in the Polish Pomeranian Voivodeship . It is located next to a hotel in the castle of the Krockow family, built in 1784 . A foundation was established in 1990 to renovate the palace .
