A political map is a thematic map that shows the administrative (i.e. political) situation as a topic.

Political maps contain, depending on the scale, as the main information, borders and administrative offices of political units such as states or their administrative units . The areas of the individual political units are usually highlighted in different colors. Larger surface bodies of water , including rivers and lakes, are often given for orientation purposes, but mountains and other topographical information are not.
