The Kunsthaus Kannen is an art museum for Art brut or Outsider Art and contemporary art in Münster in Westphalia .

history

The former Kannen estate has been owned by the Alexian Brotherhood since 1887 , which used and established the building as a social facility. Under her direction, a specialist psychiatric clinic was built on the spacious site . Art , occupational and music therapy has been part of the continuous offer since the 1980s . Long-term patients who are particularly artistically gifted receive special support and their works are collected.

In 1990, the Kunsthaus Kannen was set up in a Wilhelminian style villa on the clinic premises to archive and document the images and objects. From 1994 both thematic and solo exhibitions have been held there regularly. In 1995, 15 permanent studio spaces were set up. In October 2000, the studio community moved into what is now the Kunsthaus Kannen.

The museum today

The 600 m² new building was built in 2000 based on a design by the architect Tobias Brösskamp. It contains an exhibition room, the studios and a small reference library and serves as an integrative meeting place for disabled and non-disabled artists. Around four exhibitions and two art projects are presented annually. Robert Burda, winner of the EUWARD 2004, is one of the most important artists of the Kunsthaus .

After the Prinzhorn Collection in Heidelberg, the Kunsthaus Kannen houses one of the most extensive German collections of outsider art in a psychiatric context. The collection, which has been continuously expanded since its foundation, now includes around 5000 pictures and objects by living and deceased artists / patients.
