Markus Meurer (born April 28, 1959 in Monreal ) is a German outsider art artist. He turns found materials into plastic objects and creates collages .

life and work

Markus Meurer learned as a child from his father, who was himself an outsider artist, to use pliers and wire to make figures. But while his father built objects like motorcycles as realistically as possible, Markus Meurer became more and more free in his work. He uses wire to connect materials that are normally viewed as waste to form animistic figures, often hybrid beings between humans, animals and machines.

Since he couldn't make a living from his art, he earned his living by doing odd jobs. His creative and artistic work gave him strength to cope with life. Until 2006 he lived mostly in his parents' house in Monreal in the Eifel. Over time, he turned this house below the Löwenburg into a total work of art.

After his parents' death, life in Monreal became increasingly difficult for him. From 2006 to 2008 he lived in England with his English wife. This is where his book Die Plange Angst was written .

With the help of a friend, he and his wife came back to Germany, where they now live in Kevelaer on the Lower Rhine. The apartment serves him at the same time as a studio and exhibition space. In the meantime, his parents' house had been declared uninhabitable by the municipality of Monreal and demolished.

With the support of Lisa Inckmann, the director of the Kunsthaus Kannen in Münster, art lovers on site ensured that Markus Meurer's work was shown in numerous exhibitions at home and abroad. It was also spread through the fact that the Dutch collection "Stichting Collectie De Stadshof" recorded important works and presented them in exhibitions. In recent years, Meurer has also been making more and more collages in which his view of the world becomes clear.

Quote

“Meurer's art can almost be described as a symbiosis of nature, technology and 'matter', as he himself puts it. [...] What has been declared as waste or rubbish hides true beauty and aesthetics for Meurer, which he brings to life through a creative process. His sure eye for form and figuration can be felt
in his sculptural objects. At first glance, his wire sculptures seem extraordinarily lifelike. Only on closer inspection are things like used razor blades, batteries, bicycle bells, condoms, dolls, plastic and other found objects to be recognized that are interwoven, forming narrative and imaginative figures and sculptures. "
