AVROTROS is a Dutch broadcasting company and part of the Dutch public service Nederlandse Publieke Omroep (NPO). It was created in 2014 through the merger of the two broadcasters AVRO and TROS . The name has been used for joint broadcasts since January 1, 2014; Since September 7, 2014, all programs have been broadcast under the name AVROTROS with the corresponding logo. The slogan since that day has been “ Thuis bij AVROTROS ” (German: At home with AVROTROS).

history

The creation of AVROTROS was part of a major upheaval in the Dutch public broadcasting system. This consists, unlike z. B. the German ARD, not from regional broadcasters with a certain broadcast area. Instead, listeners and viewers can choose to become members of one of the public broadcasting associations that together form the NPO and contribute to its joint radio and television programs. Due to the verzuiling (“piling up”) of Dutch society, this membership was generally dependent on religious or political and ideological views until the 1960s.

In this system, AVRO (the oldest broadcasting company in the Netherlands), founded in 1923, addressed the liberal or “general” audience that did not belong to any of the denominational or socialist “pillars”. In contrast to the traditional associations, the TROS (Televisie en Radio Omroep Stichting) , founded in 1964, relied on a pure entertainment program based on the American model. Even so, TROS was not organized as a private broadcaster, but as a member-based association within the public broadcasting system.

The member associations of the NPO suffered from a significant decline in membership, for example AVRO and TROS lost almost 200,000 members together in the five years before their merger. That is why there were several mergers of broadcasting organizations in the 2010s. After the merger, however, the number of AVROTROS members continued to decrease: from 686,439 in the founding year 2014 to around 400,000 in 2019.

The AVRO was housed from 2000 to December 31, 2013 in the building of the AKN (Association of AVRO, KRO and NCRV ) in Hilversum. TROS has been broadcasting from the former Christelijk Lyceum, also in Hilversum, since 1970. On June 20, 2012 it was announced that the two broadcasters would move into the former building of the Nederland Wereldomroep after the merger . After renovation work, the move took place on January 1, 2014. In addition, the Vondelparkpaviljoen (in Amsterdam's Vondelpark ), now known as Vondel CS , was put into operation in 2014 in order to produce from there with the Amsterdam city station AT5 .
