Others

Sound engineers at NOS Broadcasting also developed a main microphone system for recording sound in equivalent stereophony (mixed stereophony) for stereo loudspeaker reproduction, known as the NOS stereo system.

The Dutch international service Radio Nederland Wereldomroep (RNW) is not itself part of NOS. It is borne by the Dutch state. Since 2010, however, the cooperation between RNW and the national broadcaster NOS has been strengthened.

Hostage taken in January 2015

On January 29, 2015 a man broke into the NOS building shortly before the NOS Journal at eight o'clock with a (fake) firearm. He asked for airtime to talk about "things of global importance". The man took a NOS employee hostage and let him lead him to a studio. There the hostage-taking was completely recorded. Meanwhile the entire NOS building was evacuated. After about five minutes the police reached the broadcasting studio and the hostage-taker was overpowered by the officers without a fight. The transmitter stopped operating for an hour and instead showed a still image while the building was searched. It was the first time in history that an evening edition of the NOS Journal could not be broadcast. Broadcasting continued at around 9 p.m. from an NOS studio in The Hague , initially with the broadcast of the recorded hostage situation.

On the night of January 30th, it turned out that the hostage-taker was a 19-year-old chemistry student named Tarik Z. from Pijnacker in the province of South Holland . He claimed to belong to a group of hackers and to have distributed a total of eight explosive devices with radioactive content in the Netherlands.

On July 3, 2015, Tarik Z. was sentenced to 15 months in prison. In addition, he is only allowed to approach the Hilversum Mediapark , where the NOS radio station is located, among other things, and has to pay his hostage a sum of 5,000 euros.
